17-257MR ASIC targets unlicensed binary option mobile apps
In March 2017, ASIC conducted a review of various mobile app stores focusing on apps associated with binary options trading.
The review highlighted over 330 apps which were offered to Australians by entities and individuals that appeared to beryllium unlicensed. 63% were offered by double star option issuers and facilitated trading, 25% were from various betoken providers and the rest were harnessed aside introducing brokers OR were apps designed to influence people to trade positional representation system options.
In addition to the apparent unlicensed activity undertaken away these apps, ASIC was too concerned about the following behaviour:
- Many of the mobile app descriptions contained statements which appeared to be dishonorable about the profitability of trading and the quantity of profit that could be made. For model:
- 'Earn heavenward to 90% in to a lesser extent than an time of day, as a matter of fact you can net quickly as 60 seconds and profit as much as 620% via one trade'
- '[our app] generates around 85% profitable signals from the top traders to guarantee the safe trading.'
- The majority of these apps failed to sketch the risks of trading binary options, with 80% having no risk warning at all.
- Some apps from introducing brokers made it appear they were the issuer of the binary star option and did non clearly inform investors if and how they would be stipendiary for referral business.
- Some binary option review/education sites were merely collecting attribute information which could be used for overflowing-pressure cold career. E.g., or s developer websites associated with the apps promoted their ability to deliver traffic to cassino, drawing, forex, and binary option armed service providers.
ASIC contacted Apple and Google most the apps that were the subject of this surveillance. We were encouraged with the speed both entities abstracted the relevant apps identified by ASIC from their respective app stores. We also note that Apple recently changed its review guidelines to state that apps that alleviate binary options trading will non be permitted in its app store.
ASIC would also like to cue investors that binary option providers are in dominance of the pricing for their intersection and, on reviewing some of the comments that appeared with the apps, it seemed that some investors successful money in the demonstration mode but straying money once they moved to a live trading system of rules.
Commission Cathie Armor said, 'This is a timely reminder for investors to continue vigilant and not tumble for flashy advertising or hard selling. Investors also need to make a point any financial service provider, regardless of the style that fiscal service is being provided, is adequately licensed and authorised to provide those services.
'In an age where applied science can skin who is offering and dominant a product, vendee beware has ne'er been so life-or-death. If something appears too good to be true, it probably is.'
